Alana (Al) Bartol (she/they) is an interdisciplinary artist, mentor, experimental filmmaker, writer, sometimes curator, and Assistant Professor at the Alberta University of the Arts in Treaty 7 Territory (Canada). Longlisted for the Sobey Art Award in 2019 and 2021, their artwork examines relationships between resource extraction, ecology, and the more-than-human world. Bartol explores petropropaganda, environmental contamination, and concepts of remediation while increasingly engaging questions of embodiment, desire, and queer ecology. Combining research, ritual, and collaboration, their practice considers how cultural narratives shape energy futures and possibilities for collective transformation. Their work has been presented in exhibitions and festivals across Canada and internationally. They approach artistic practice as a form of collective learning grounded in friendship, curiosity, learning, and more-than-human relations. More at alanabartol.com
